5/24/21 Swim team update

Hi Regency families,

First, a message from the coach’s desk......

Last week was a huge success! Thank you to our families who have decided to join the team this year. Last week we focused on freestyle and reacquainting with swim team after months of being out of the pool. My approach before time trials is to build a base of experience on each stroke that swimmers compete in, with further refinement throughout the season. This week swimmers will be focusing on backstroke and breaststroke. Please make sure swimmers are wearing goggles while swimming backstroke to protect their eyes from the sun. Things to practice at the pool: If you are visiting the pool with your family here are a few things swimmers can work on outside of practice. Side breathing, this is a key piece of freestyle that newer swimmers often struggle with. We are looking for swimmers to keep their head low to the water, looking towards the lane rope rather than the sky. The coaches have also noticed swimmers struggling with breath control. This will improve as the season goes on. A good way to practice this is to have swimmers blow out under water and only breathe in above water. Remember stationary breath holding differs greatly from breath control during swimming. Here is a great video that shows proper freestyle technique and common mistakes swimmers of all levels make youtube.com/watch?v=s2h0tFWwqFc. We noticed that swimmers are doing very well at integrating new techniques into their prior knowledge of swimming. This makes me excited to see what we can achieve in the coming weeks!

See you at practice! -Coach Olivia

VOLUNTEERS

TSA is allowing every club to decide if they prefer in person or virtual. If a club chooses virtual, the meet will default to virtual. Every team has 7 days from the meet date to decide how they would like to proceed. Here are the positions that still need to be filled if we were to be away for our away meets and home for our home meets. ***

Time Trials 6/8 7/8 Girls Kid Pusher Timer

Lifetime 6/15 none

Oxxford Hunt 6/22 none

Woodcreek 6/29 Starter

Weldon Ridge 7/6 9/10 Boys Kid Pusher, Place Judge, Starter

Amberly 7/13 Clerk of Course, 9/10 Girls Kid pusher

West Lake 7/20 Announcer, Clerk of Course

***There is a great chance that we will be virtual at home for some away meets. Home (host) meets require more volunteers than away meets. Swimmingly will help alleviate some of this, but not all. We will still need a starter, announcer, and concessions with 7 day notification. This is why EVERYONE needs to sign up and attend one of the Swimmingly webinars to learn how to use Swimmingly.

SWIMMINGLY- This info came from Swimmingly, “We recommend you send over these Training Webinar opportunities out to all your parent volunteers as well for them to attend (especially the Swimmingly APP training opportunities)!”
